week “Field Training Officer” school from February 24-28, 2014
taught by the North Coast Polytechnic Institute.

The course is designed to provide information
to a Field Training Officer (FTO) to prepare a probationary officer
with the necessary information to properly and professionally begin
their career as a peace officer. The FTO is an integral part of
assisting the probationary officer in making the transition from the
classroom environment to the application of learned skills in field
situations. The training program will include information on the
role of the FTO, the adult learning concepts, the evaluation
process, civil liability issues, coaching and mentoring, leadership
& ethics, effective communication skills, motivation, gender issues
in the FTO process, and documentation in the FTO manual (paper copy
and CD ROM) that is a modified version of both the “San Jose & “LA”
models that may serve as a documentation and evaluation tool to
successfully promote the development of the probationary officer.
